Great Weekend for Sport
Posted: 2011-09-23 17:00:00
Last weekend was a fantastic weekend for sport both locally and internationally. Saturday began with an early start as I got up to watch Ireland take on Australia in the Rugby World Cup. Despite many commentators believing Ireland didn’t have a chance, they proved them all wrong and beat Australia, bringing them one step closer to the World Cup Quarter-Finals. It was amazing game to watch with the final score coming in at Ireland 15 and Australia 6. I’ll be up early again this weekend to watch them take on Russia on Sunday morning and hopefully make it two in a row.
It was another victory for the underdog in GAA this week in the All-Ireland Senior Football Final. Despite the fact that bookies and commentators alike expected Kerry to win, Dublin proved them all wrong and won the title of All-Ireland Champions for the first time since 1995. With just 7 minutes to go, it looked like Kerry were going to win but a Dublin goal in the 64th minute and then a final point taken by their goalie, Stephen Cluxton, led the Dubs to a victory of one point over Kerry. I was lucky enough to be at a match and I have to say I’ve never experienced an atmosphere like it. When the final whistle was blown all you could see was a sea of blue jerseys all cheering loudly for Dublin. It was definitely an experience to remember!
Also this week, we had a TV3 outside broadcast in Athy at the launch of the National Ploughing Championships. Our group spa director, Sophia Weir, was interviewed by Alan Hughes and did a great job explaining some of the new spa treatments available in Carlton spas. The Carlton Group were represented on the IFA stand which was a great spot as I believe the guys were busy all week.
I don’t have much planned this weekend so I’m looking forward on taking some time out to relax. Whatever you’re up to this weekend I hope you enjoy it and don’t forget to cheer on Ireland on Sunday morning!
