Getting Ready for the Roses - By Guest Blogger Brian Hurley
On Monday August 5th 2013 I was at home preparing myself for a new and exciting chapter in my life. Thoughts of my youth came rushing back, with the feelings of excitement, anxiousness and a few nerves, it felt as if I was making the transition from primary to secondary school all over again. After working in media for the last 13 years or so I was about to take a leap to hospitality after gladly accepting the role of Business Development Manager for the Carlton Hotel Tralee. Like most things in life, I needn’t have worried so much, as I soon realised that the right decision had been made. The whole Carlton Group family welcomed me with open arms and even a few kisses on the cheek! The fact that Denis Deery, General Manager of the Carlton Tralee along with my colleague Brigeen O Sullivan (Sales & Marketing Manager) treated me to a beautiful lunch on my first day, prepared by the very talented head chef Jason and his team was an added bonus.
Three days into my new job I was part of my first national sales and marketing team meeting which took place in one of our fine meeting rooms at the hotel in Tralee. To my delight I realised I was the only male at the table surrounded by a team of beautiful women, again another bonus!! Obviously I am very aware that a job needs to be done but if all can be achieved with a smile on my face, a new ‘pep in my step’ and a positive attitude then I am happy out.
Now fast forward to today and we here at the Carlton Hotel Tralee are about to transform into the home of the Rose of Tralee International Festival. The Rose of Tralee team, Rose of Tralee Nicola McEvoy, TV host Daithi O Se, 32 new Roses, family and friends and our many other special guests are about to call the Carlton Hotel, Tralee, home for the next number of days. I can see the large Rose Dome outside my window as I type and the bright lights of Fossetts big top just behind it. The level of excitement in the hotel and Tralee town is at the very top of the excitement barometer!! The bars are prepped, the food prepared, the superior and executive rooms await our many guests, entertainment booked and I and the Carlton team are standing by to welcome all, with smiles all round. Finally I would like to thank all the team for their welcome and support. I would also like to wish our Managing Director John Varley the very best as he joins the Judging Panel of this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival.
See you on TV John!
