Apprentice Week 7

Posted: 2010-11-02 12:00:00 This week’s task for the candidates was set by Cadbury’s and involved creating a ‘Village Fun Day’ to promote the new Spots V Stripes campaign. The teams would each be sent to a small town where they would have to create and run a fun day. Again Bill chose the project managers himself and decided on Will for Elev8 and Michelle for Fusion. Another interesting condition he put on the candidates was that they were not allowed use the internet, so it was back to basics for the two teams! Once they arrived at their location, both teams seemed to get off to a slow start and were in no rush to get anything done. The first element of their task was to create an original game to promote on the day. Fusion chose a game called ‘Crawl Ball’ using large gym ...

The Carlton Apprentice

Posted: 2010-10-29 17:00:00 Following the success of our participation in TV3’s Apprentice, this week we launched our search for the Carlton Apprentice! With over 900 employees in the group we received a lot of applications but we have narrowed it down to 11 candidates. Sarah O’Neill, the latest of Bill’s candidates to be fired, joined me on Tuesday to meet all the candidates and give them their official brief for the task. The task we have set for our Apprentices is similar to the one we set for the show in September. Each of the candidates will have a stand in a Tesco store in Ireland for the 10th & 11th of December. The top two sellers will go head to head in the final from 17th – 19th of December in two large shopping centres in Ireland, the Pavilions in Swords and Whitewater ...

Apprentice Week 6

Posted: 2010-10-26 11:00:00 The task for the candidates this week was another marketing challenge, this time for Ford to promote their new Fiestaval campaign. The teams were asked to create a calendar for Ford using photographs from a festival, depicting key party moments with the car. Again the task was not too difficult or so I thought! One instruction Bill gave to the teams this week was to choose candidates who had not been project manager before to lead this task. Elev8 chose Sarah to lead their team and Fusion chose Jamie as their project manager. Both candidates seemed strong in previous tasks so I was expecting a lot from them in this task. However, once again the candidates failed to live up to the mark and neither team produced a great calendar. Elev8 made a crucial mistake and left out the Ford lo ...

New Sponsorship

Posted: 2010-10-22 17:00:00 I’ve been fairly busy this week with meetings and as a result I spent most of the week based in head office at the Carlton Dublin Airport Hotel. However, I did get to take some time out of my day on Wednesday to take part in a photo shoot at the North Kildare Rugby pitch near Maynooth. The photo shoot was arranged to launch the new North Kildare Rugby team jersey and as the Carlton Hotel Group are now the official sponsors I was asked to be involved. I was joined on the shoot by Rose of Tralee Clare Kamembattu, President of the Rugby club Paul Mooney and Team Captain Alan Brannigan. Clare did a great job modelling the new jersey and it was nice to get the chance to catch up with her again. On Thursday evening I headed over to the Citywest Hotel to attend the Entrepreneur of t ...

Apprentice Week 5

Posted: 2010-10-19 12:30:00 The object of this week’s task was to create a bus shelter billboard advertising WEEE Ireland Recycling plus a marketing strategy for the billboards. I thought it was a fairly simple task and one that would give the candidates a chance to be creative. Once again they proved me wrong! After a switch of team members Bill chose Barry as project manager for Fusion and Tara as project manager for Elev8. Once the brainstorming sessions started Elev8 came up with their idea quite quickly but Fusion on the other hand seemed to struggle with their campaign. Both teams made a few mistakes along the way but the one that angered me the most was when Elev8 changed WEEE Ireland’s logo. This is something that Bill has spoken out against in the past as it is a big mistake in business ...

Kevin Dundon in Castletroy

Posted: 2010-10-13 17:00:00 I’ve been based in Dublin Airport this week as I had a few meetings in the area but I hope to head over to Limerick tomorrow evening to the Carlton Castletroy Park Hotel, where Kevin Dundon will be doing a cooking demonstration.Kevin Dundon is a well known celebrity chef and proprietor of the award winning Dunbrody House. Tomorrow night will give the people of Limerick the opportunity to experience Kevin’s most popular dishes plus learn some tips along the way. I must admit that I’m more a fan of what the cooking produces then actually doing it but I am looking forward to hopefully meeting Kevin and seeing what he does on the night. If you happen to be in the area then call into the hotel at 8pm as I know they still have some tickets available. If the cooking de ...

Apprentice Week 4

Posted: 2010-10-12 11:00:00 On this week’s show the Apprentice candidates took part in another direct sales task, this time for Ryobi tools. It was a straightforward task whereby the two teams had to set up a stand in Woodies and sell the tools, plus record a slot with Alan Hughes for Ireland AM.Fusion decided on Kieran to be their project manager quite quickly but I don’t think David was too happy to be chosen as project manager for Elev8. It seemed that he was chosen by his team purely because he didn’t seem to want it, an unusual strategy but it worked for them in the end. The candidate that stood out the most in this task was definitely Niamh McDonald, who doesn’t have a sales background but performed extremely well in the task.As always there was some drama during the task, this ...
