Ireland Wins!

Posted: 2011-03-25 12:00:00 The highly anticipated Ireland and England Six Nations game last Saturday certainly didn’t disappoint! I had planned to watch the match at home but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity of some last minute tickets and instead headed to the Aviva Stadium to watch it live. Obviously, I’m now delighted I got the opportunity as it was a brilliant match and the atmosphere in the stadium was amazing. Despite many spectators predicting that Ireland would be defeated at home by their rivals, this was not the case as Brian O’Driscoll instead led his team to victory. And an outstanding victory at that as they beat England 24 – 8 and in turn destroyed their chance at the Grand Slam title. I would also like to congratulate Clarenbridge GAA on their victory against ...

St. Patrick's Festival

Posted: 2011-03-18 16:30:00 St. Patrick’s Day is the one day of the year that most Irish people, both home and abroad, look forward to. Some because of the extra day off work with a chance to celebrate their Irishness and others because it’s a chance to take a break on their sacrifice for Lent! Giving up all the bad things for Lent is something most of us have done since we were small and we were always allowed a days grace on St. Patrick’s Day which made the sacrifice a bit easier. The only problem this year though is that Lent only started a week ago so it’s going to be a long five week wait until Easter! This year with Paddy’s Day falling on a Thursday it meant an extra long weekend for most but unfortunately I wasn’t so lucky. I did manage to take yesterday off though ...

Hurling All Star

Posted: 2011-03-11 16:00:00 Now that the election is over, the focus this week was on Enda Kenny announcing his new Ministers of State. Of course the appointment that would interest me the most was who he was going to chose as his Tourism minister. Although I was slightly surprised by his choice to put Transport, Tourism and Sport into one department I would like to wish Leo Varadkar the best of luck in the role and look forward to working with him in the future. Another big story in the news this week was of course Pancake Tuesday! This is one day of the year that everyone looks forward to even though we’re all guilty of overindulging. The Carlton Group were giving away free pancakes with every main course purchased and I must admit I sampled quite a few myself! I think overindulging is part of the f ...

What a Great Week for Irish Cricket!

Posted: 2011-03-04 17:00:00 It was great to see the Irish Cricket team get such a fantastic result against England on Wednesday, it was like "Italia 90" again reading the papers yesterday morning. I'll be up early on Sunday to watch the game against India, it would be amazing if they could spring another surprise and if not hopefully they can power on and make the super 8's.Another great victory this week was had by the Carlton Redcastle Hotel, who were voted realweddings.ie Ulster Wedding Venue of the year. This is a great achievement for the team up in Donegal and I've no doubt there are plenty more to follow. On Thursday evening I attended the re-launch of Mercy's Restaurant in our Carlton Abbey Hotel in Athy. Richard and the team have really done a fantastic job with the restaurant, with some delectable ...

Vote 123!

Posted: 2011-02-25 10:00:00 The news this week has been all about election day and encouraging everyone to exercise their right to vote and go down to their local polling stations on Friday. Although I prefer to remain neutral when talking publicly about the election I can’t stress enough how important it is that everyone votes. I’ll be down to my local polling station as soon as I get a chance today and I’ll be making sure my colleagues take the time to do the same! As it is all about voting this week, I’m sure you know that we at the Carlton Hotel Group always like to get in on the action. At our recent marketing meeting I had heard the team mention an idea about a voting offer and I must admit I’m impressed with what they came up with. Playing on the ‘vote 123’ c ...

Rugby Week!

Posted: 2011-02-18 17:00:00 I spent last Sunday afternoon in the new Aviva Stadium watching Ireland take on France in the Six Nations. It was actually the first Six Nations match to be played in the new stadium, and for any of you that have yet to visit the Aviva it’s an amazing place to watch a live match. It was a close call throughout the game but unfortunately Ireland were beaten in the end which may hinder their hopes at winning the Six Nations title. This weekend is another busy one in the Magners league with all four provinces playing matches over the next two days. Connacht, Ulster and Munster are all playing tonight with Connacht at home in the Galway Sportsground against the Glasgow Warriors, Ulster are playing away in Wales against the Llanelli Scarlets and Munster take on Edinburgh in Thom ...

The race is on

Posted: 2011-02-11 17:00:00 The date for the general election was announced last week and this week the campaign really took off with the first debate at the start of the week. The politicians were all out in force canvassing to homes and business across the country. From a tourism perspective I’m delighted to see that all parties have presented quite interesting tourism policies and I look forward to working with the next government on implementing these policies and creating jobs for the sector.I paid a brief visit to our Limerick property, the Carlton Casteltroy Park hotel, this week where I met with the hotel’s general manager Denis Deery. I was delighted to hear from Denis that plans for 2011 are well advanced and expectations for the year are bright despite challenges in the local environm ...
