As Chief Executive of Carlton Hotel Group, I'd like to welcome you to the Carlton Hotel Group blog. The Carlton Hotel Group was established in 2004 and since then has developed as one of the premier Hotel Groups in Ireland. In the past 7 years Carlton has grown substantially from operating one hotel to having a presence in many locations throughout Ireland.
Through this blog it is my aim to give you an insight into what's going on in all of our hotels plus my opinions on current affairs, sports news, general activities and events. I will also occassionally invite some of my colleagues to write on the blog giving you more opinions and insights into what's going on at Carlton. If you have any questions or queries on any of the posts please leave a comment and I will respond at my earliest convenience. Enjoy reading.............

I’d like to begin by wishing you a very happy New Year and I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas break. I know the weather affected a lot of travel plans for Christmas and even though we had a white Christmas I don’t think anyone was too excited about it! In fact because of the snow the Carlton Hotel Dublin Airport opened its doors on Christmas day to accommodate the stranded passengers at the airport. I must admit it was a first for me as I have never worked on Christmas day but it was all hands on deck in the hotel as we tried to give the guests the perfect day despite the odds. We went all festive in the hotel by offering a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, a carol singing competition and even a visit from Santa. Thankfully it ended up being a great succ ...

The Carlton Apprentice Challenge for 2010 has been a huge success and both myself and the board of directors are so proud of the ambitious young people working in our company, they represent the future and the energy for the Carlton Hotel Group. I would like to encourage all of the participants across all the Carlton Hotels be proud of their achievements throughout this competition. The Apprentice final was held last weekend between Carlton Millrace representative Lisa Kehoe in the Whitewater Shopping Centre Newbridge and Brendan Havlin of the Carlton Redcastle in The Pavilion Shopping Centre Swords. Both candidates performed extremely well throughout the competition but it all came down to voucher sales over the weekend and as always there can only be one winne ...

This week began with Bill Cullen choosing his next apprentice in the final of TV3’s Apprentice and will end with me finding my new apprentice as we reach the final in the search for the Carlton Apprentice. On Monday night I attended the wrap party for TV’s Apprentice in Crystal and it was a great night. I must admit it was great to get the opportunity to chat to all the candidates after briefly meeting them for the Carlton task on the show. They were all very friendly but in true reality show fashion a few of them came across very differently to how they were portrayed on the show. It’s definitely all about making good TV but to be honest that’s what kept us all glued to the show for the past 13 weeks! Bill and Jackie made an appearance, along with the win ...

The final of the Apprentice aired last night on TV3 and it certainly didn’t disappoint, with both contestants proving they deserved their place in the final. Niamh and Michelle were set a marketing task by Bill where they had to host an event for three clients using experiential marketing. Neither of them were too familiar with experiential marketing but Bill brought back some of the past candidates to help them with the task. Once both finalists had chosen their team they set off to visit their three clients for the event. The members of both teams worked really well together because for once they weren’t competing for the same prize. Niamh managed Elev8 and all members of the team worked hard to help her chances of winning the task and Fusion also worked together to ...

It’s busy around the Carlton Group this week as all the hotels have been enthusiastically getting ready for the first Carlton Apprentice task. The first challenge began today with the gift voucher selling task in Tesco stores across Ireland. All of the candidates have been preparing for weeks and drumming up support from their family and friends. As none of the candidates have experience in sales they may find it difficult at first but listening to what all of them have planned for the two days I’m confident they’ll do well. What started as a direct sales task for the candidates and their sales managers has turned into a competition between all the hotels with each of the candidates having the full support of their property behind them. It’s great to see s ...

This week Bill Cullen’s apprentices faced one of their toughest tasks, the one most of them were probably dreading. The semi-final on The Apprentice is the interview round, where Bill organises for four of his business colleagues to grill each of the final candidates in interviews. This generally makes for good television as we get to find out more about the candidates and see if they have any skeletons in their closets!Normally at this stage there are only three candidates left but this year Bill had four; Will, Panos, Niamh and Michelle. All of the four candidates were grilled by Gavin Duffy, Mairead Fleming, David Bloch and Sheena Clohessy. Although the main objective is to interview the candidates, each of the interviewers is given particular instructions on what to gri ...
