The next Rose of Tralee?

Posted: 2011-06-10 10:00:00 Another long weekend over but unfortunately we didn’t get the heat wave we were promised. I’m sure many of you took the barbeque out of the shed on Friday evening and put it back in on Saturday! Even the sunny weather that traditionally comes with the start of the Leaving and Junior cert exams hasn’t happened this year but maybe it’ll pick up in the next week or two. Hopefully the exams are going well for all the students sitting them this year, from what I’ve heard there have been no surprises on the questions so far which is a good sign.

The regional finals of the Rose of Tralee were on in Portlaoise at the weekend and from what I’ve heard they went very well. Not only were there plenty of Roses at the event but all their friends and family came along to show their support so a great time was had by all. We had quite a few of the Carlton team there over the weekend and some of them managed to persuade Dáithí Ó’Sé to pose as a Rose, although I'm not sure if he has what it takes! One thing is for sure from what my team have told me it'll be hard to choose this year's winner when the time comes as there are a lot of great contenders. I'm looking forward to meeting them all when the Rose tour starts in August and in the mean time I hope Clare enjoys her last few months as the Rose of Tralee!

It was also a busy week in sport and unfortunately I wasn’t lucky with my bet on the races. The Queen’s horse Carlton House didn’t win the Derby but thankfully I didn’t bet too much on it! I was delighted to have one win though when my adopted county Kildare beat Meath in the Senior Football Championships. Kildare fought hard to dethrone last year’s Leinster champions which helped them finish on a six point lead. It was great for Irish rugby to get the news this week that the Heineken Cup final 2013 will be held at the Aviva stadium. The decision of the ERC Board to bring it back to Dublin for the first time since 2003 is further recognition of the passion that Irish fans have for the sport.

Hopefully we might get some sun this weekend but either way I hope you all enjoy whatever you’re up to!
