Galway Racing Festival is Back!
Let me start by congratulating my adopted county Kildare on their victory over Sligo last Saturday evening. Kildare secured their place in the All Ireland Senior Football Quarter Finals with a 0-13 to 0-4 win against Sligo and will now go on to face Cork this Sunday. Cork are the strong favourites but there have been a few surprises in this year’s championship so Kildare could still beat the Rebels on Sunday.
This week began with a trip to one of my favourite events of the year, the Galway Racing Festival. I was at the opening day as the Carlton Hotel Galway City were sponsoring the 5.45pm feature race which had a €70,000 prize for the winner. The evening got off to a great start, the weather was perfect and there was a great atmosphere amongst the crowd of 17,000 people. To top it all, Jane Mangan made history as the first lady rider to win the €70,000 feature race when she partnered with Dermot Weld’s Midnight Music. It was a brilliant race to watch and it completed an opening day hat-trick for Dermot Weld.
Unfortunately I wasn't over in Galway for the week as I had to travel back to Dublin to attend to some business. From what I’ve heard the festival looks set to be even busier than last year and this week so far it has been a great success. I’m hoping to get back down for a few days over the weekend so let’s hope the rain holds off until Tuesday at least.
In other sporting news the focus is definitely on the Olympics at the moment. The Games have been a great success so far with Ireland’s chances of getting a few medals still quite strong. And of course I have to give the opening ceremony a mention and congratulate Danny Boyle on his amazing work as the director; it’s definitely one we will all remember.
Hope you enjoy whatever you get up to this weekend and that the weather is good!
