Apprentice Week 9
Posted: 2010-11-16 11:30:00
This week’s task for the Apprentice candidates was set by Spar and involved creating a marketing campaign for a new and innovative Irish product and then presenting it to Spar. For the task Bill mixed up the teams again moving Panos and Jamie to Fusion and Barry, Dave and Niamh to Elev8. For project manager Elev8 chose Barry despite Niamh wanting to do it and Fusion chose Michelle as noone else seemed to want it!
After a brief meeting both teams were split in two as one half went to Spar shops to do some market research and the other half met with suppliers to discuss their product options. Each team had sixty minutes to let ten different companies pitch their product and only Fusion seemes to manage their time correctly. In the end Elev8 decided on a range of ready meals that heat themselves as their product and Fusion chose a range of bars and cakes. In my opinion Elev8 definitely had the more innovative product but ultimately it was all about how they pitched it to Spar.
On the day of the presentation Fusion definitely made a better pitch to Spar and were clearer about the branding and what their product offered. Despite being passionate about the product Barry didn’t portray this in his presentation and failed to get across a simple message of ‘five star meals in five minutes’. The poor presentation plus the dull design on the product led to Elev8’s failure in this task and Fusion won this week. Barry Caesar Hunt brought Will McCreevey and David Cashman back into the boardroom with him and Bill decided to fire David. I definitely agree with his decision in this case because David has made a few mistakes along the way and deserved to go this week.
There are only seven candidates left so it’s definitely getting interesting now and I can’t wait to see what happens on next week’s task!
